There are a lot of sources from which we can derive self-confidence. Paying attention to our appearance and health; excelling at work or in business; being the best daughter, sister, mother, friend we can be; volunteering in the community; mastering a skill or hobby like art, dance, cooking or sports.

These are all useful strategies for increasing confidence within ourselves. They can make us feel good about being alive in our own skin.

What’s probably less useful in developing true self-confidence is when we base how we feel about ourselves on how we “stack up” to others.

I call this comparison confidence. Comparison confidence is when you compare yourself to another person and, finding your circumstances/appearance/stature in life to be better than theirs, develop a sense of superiority or false importance.

It’s one of the cheapest ways to “prove” to yourself how great of a person you are. It’s also one of the fastest ways to forget to be compassionate toward others.

Comparison confidence shows up when you find yourself saying or thinking:

That girl needs to put some clothes on! She’s out here looking like a $2 prostitute. I might not have her body, but at least I know how to cover up and have some respect for myself.

My sister is living like a heathen! She needs to accept Jesus into her life. SMH I might not be perfect but at least I’m going to heaven.

I would never let my child go out of the house like that! I’m not the best mother, but I’m a much better one than that kid’s mother is.

Man that XYZ celebrity on XYZ reality show needs to get her life together! I make much better decisions about my life than she does.

I can’t believe my best friend forgave her boyfriend for cheating on her! My own relationship is not the best, but at least my man comes home every night. Hmph.

Now that lady knows she needs to lose some weight. She is so fat! I struggle with my own weight loss journey, but hey at least I’m not obese like she is!

I can’t believe the women who come on Maury trying to find their baby daddy! My kids have two different fathers, but at least I know who they are. I’m not a whore like they are, thank goodness!

These young girls out here are so stupid. They let men run all over them! I’ve had my share of mistakes, but I’ve been there, done that. I’m running circles around these skanks!

Comparison confidence is present anytime we engage in the mindset that, “I might not be X, but at least I’m not Y.”

Not to mention that referring to another woman as a “whore” is a terrible way to make yourself feel superior, comparison confidence can make us focus on other people’s shortcomings while diminishing or dismissing our own.

When we compare our own lives to the next woman’s perceived messed-up situation, we can become overly confident about the direction we’re going in our own lives. It can cause us to gloss over the areas in which we need personal development to become better than ourselves, instead of better than someone else.

If you want to feel better about yourself, do things that will make you feel better about yourself. Do things that make you happy. Challenge yourself to pursue new, exciting goals for your life.

If you want to lift yourself up, then LIFT YOURSELF UP. Not tear someone else down in your comparisons of how much more attractive, virtuous, or smart you are than the other women around you. Reinvest the time you spend being critical of others into taking care of yourself.

P.S. Here’s what to do when you forget.

This year, I wanted to start being more intentional about reflecting on my life and work. How else will I know if I’m making progress on the goals, dreams and opportunities I have for my life?

I loved doing my annual review of 2011 (here are the questions I used for that), so now I’ve committed to doing a review of each month of the year as well. Here, I present a brief review of the first month of 2012, starting with a word that captures the essence how I spent the month of January: CONNECTION.

I was able to meet my needs for social interaction, community and romance in January. I also learned new lessons about my business and was able to commit to taking care of my mind and body in several ways.

Specifically:

I spent a LOT of time with my family. I stayed at my mom’s house for an entire week visiting with my grandmother, sister, aunt and cousins. Lots of laughter and eating and cooking and loving happened. Also, movies! We watched Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and The Help.

I began putting more effort into my love life by prioritizing dating. I revised my online dating profile on OK Cupid, “met” several interesting men and went on about six dates (with two different guys).

I hosted a winter happy hour for HBW readers in the DC area. We had a blast and it was such a privilege to meet so many positive ladies!

I was also able to commit to a somewhat-regular self-care routine of cooking, meditating and getting enough sleep.

I conducted an advertising experiment on the HBW blog for the month of January, placing ads on the site and blogging every day. The result? About $100 in strictly advertising revenue. Not big money, for sure! The unexpected result though, was about 85,000 pageviews of the site last month (a new high, way up from the usual 50,000), 29 sales of the 31 Day Reset Workbook as well as four new clients for personal development and business coaching. So, daily blogging on HBW in January definitely had a return on investment for me, business-wise!

I also met with two different nonprofit organizations to talk with them about future speaking or training opportunities. As a result of being proactive about requesting the meetings, I now have two new potential speaking clients who are interested in how we might be able to work together in 2012.

For me, January 2012 was mostly about connection. As a result, I am not feeling as isolated as I did when I came back from Hawaii. In my work, I was able to clearly see the impact of my writing on my revenue, which is what allows me to make a living doing what I love!

What I want to experience in February 2012 is clarity, especially around finances and where my lifestyle and business will take me this spring.

Your Turn

What ONE word would you use to describe your experience of January 2012? What do you want to experience in February 2012?

If you choose to answer this question as part of a review on your own blog, please go ahead and post the link in the comments so we can read it! I would love to hear how your year is progressing so far.

If you want to join the February 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge, you may still do so here.

And, in case you missed them, here are all 17 posts I wrote on the blog last month, in addition to the daily 31 Day Reset posts. Yep, that’s 48 blog posts in one month. I was a writing machine! Thank you, as always, for reading and sharing.

This is the announcement post for the February 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Note: Please read everything on this page if you want to join us for February. If you already completed last month’s challenge, no need to do this one (unless you want to repeat it) as the exercises are identical month by month.

For February 2012, I am putting out the invitation here on the blog for those who want to benefit from my virtual life coaching program, 31 Days to Reset Your Life. Each day of the program requires you to complete an exercise that will help you get back on track in ways that will allow you to become a better, happier, healthier and more successful person in the future.

You’ll get exercises to help you:

Get out of an unsatisfying rut

Rediscover who you truly are

Develop a personal mission statement

Create a map for your ideal life

Envision and pursue your passion and purpose

Get clear about your goals for the future

Eliminate behaviors that are holding you back from being happy

Experiment with new strategies for living a healthy life

Build new relationships

Cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit within

…and much more!

Who is this challenge for?

Anyone who wants to manifest a change in their life, design a more fulfilling existence, make room for new possibilities or simply gain more clarity about their path to happiness and success. This challenge will especially be of benefit to you if you’ve felt stuck or in a rut during the last year.

How to sign up:

Each participant who signs up for 31 Days to Reset Your Life will commit to doing each of the daily exercises.

Step 1:

You will need to SIGN UP HERE so you can be notified of each of the daily assignments. This is the MOST IMPORTANT STEP, otherwise you will NOT receive any of my challenge blog posts in your inbox. Once you enter and confirm your email address, you will automatically receive a daily email. The emails will be sent to you every day for 31 days, starting immediately. Each email will contain an exercise or assignment designed to provoke reflection and planning. Each email will also contain a link back to my blog where you can comment and connect with other 31 Day Reset participants. This way, you get a daily reminder to complete the exercise and share your learnings with the group!

Step 2:

One of the best things about participating in a challenge is the accountability and support, so in addition to signing up, please add your name, blog link, and Twitter handle (if you have one) in the comments below so that we can keep tabs on your progress throughout the month. As soon as you sign up, you will receive your first assignment and you can get started on right away, whenever you choose to begin!

How to participate:

As you complete each of the daily exercise, blog about the results (if some of the exercises don’t really apply to you, no worries). Note: If you decide to blog along, tag your posts with the tag “31dayreset” to make them easier to share with us.

If you don’t want to write about the challenge on your blog, you can still participate in a few other ways:

Follow along with the daily exercises and let us know how you apply them in the comments of each of the posts here on Happy Black Woman

Comment on the blog posts written by the other challenge participants – be sure to leave your own insights, suggestions and tips on the topics covered and share with us what you’re learning

Post your updates and learnings on Twitter using the hashtag #31dayreset (and follow me @happyblackwoman)

Join the Happy Black Woman Facebook community where you can post your insights and comment within the Facebook platform

P.S. Don’t forget to SIGN UP HERE so you can be notified of each of the daily assignments. Again, this is the most important step, otherwise you will NOT receive any of my challenge blog posts in your inbox and you will have to manage this process on your own.

P.P.S. Don’t forget to come over and join The Happy Black Woman Facebook Community if you haven’t already so you can get even more encouragement throughout the month! If you’re on Twitter, follow me @happyblackwoman to get updates there, too.

Want All the 31 Day Reset Exercises in One Place?

The Reset Workbook contains all 31 daily assignments in one place as well as 28 printable worksheets to supplement the material and help you complete the daily exercises. The workbook is 60 pages long and comes in an electronic, ebook format.

For those who may wish to go at their own pace, this workbook allows you to have all the assignments at your fingertips in addition to the opportunity to connect with others who are doing the 31 Day Reset program here on the blog. There are also a few bonuses, like the full version of the Life Mapping Workbook with a video training!

This post is Day 31 of the January 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. To stay in touch with the community and get notified of new blog posts now that the Challenge is over, be sure to subscribe to the blog here.

Yes, it’s really the last day of the 31 Day Reset! Thank you for being a part of the community. Today, you have a great opportunity to build yourself a reminder of all your goals and dreams by creating a vision board. A vision board is a powerful visualization tool that you can create as inspiration for your journey toward your ideal life. Some people refer to it as a “dream board.” No matter what you call it, it’s basically a collage of pictures and quotes that serve to remind you of your passion and purpose way beyond this program. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be an artist to make one!

Estimated Time to Complete: 60-90 minutes

Today’s exercise will require you to assemble some art supplies. You’ll need:

a cork board, posterboard or small canvas

some magazines

markers or paint

some thumbtacks, pins, glue or tape

Step 1:

Cut out images from magazines (or draw your own) that represent your ideal life narrative, your personal mission statement or simply inspire you.

Step 2:

Paste or tack the images on your corkboard, posterboard or canvas.

Step 3:

Use your markers or paint to write your personal mantra or other favorite quotes onto your vision board.

Step 4:

If you like, frame your vision board and hang it on your wall. Make sure you display your vision board somewhere you’ll see it everyday and be inspired!

You can also create your vision board online with the O Dream Board program from Oprah.com. I haven’t used it yet myself, but it looks like a cool way to utilize technology to put together your vision board. Plus, it’s free!

Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share a photo of your vision board in the comments! How did you feel as you were putting it together? If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

This post is Day 30 of the January 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. I am posting all of the exercises live on a daily basis here on the blog throughout the month. Sign up here to officially join us. To make sure you don’t miss any future assignments, subscribe to the blog here.

OK, so before we get started, I just want to acknowledge that today’s assignment may seem a little morbid. But it must be done. We’re all going to die at some point! The hope is that we will live full, enjoyable lives while we’re here on earth. And one way to do that is to get clear on how you want that life to look to other people. So today, you’re going to write your own eulogy. A eulogy is the speech given about a person at their funeral that tells what kind of life and impact the person had. This exercise should pull together elements of your personal mission statement, your ideal life narrative or even your bucket list.

Estimated Time to Complete: 60 minutes

So imagine you die at age 77 (which is about the average age people live to these days). Think about how you want to be remembered.

Below is an easy format to follow, adapted from the Art of Manliness. Random, I know – but I loved their approach!

Your geographic history (keep this brief). Where did you live? Did you travel all over or did you retire in one place?

College and career. Where you went to school, what you majored in, what jobs you had. Include any awards or honors you won or accomplishments you made.

Family and relationships. Did you get married? Have kids? How many?

Your hobbies and interests. What did you do for fun in your life?

The qualities and characteristics that set you apart and made you memorable. What did people like or admire about you?

What people will miss about you. What impact did you have on others? How did you help them?

Here’s my eulogy:

Known to her family as “nosy Rosie”, Rosetta was born near Cleveland, Ohio, but spent most of her life and career in the Washington, DC area. Early on, she developed a passion for helping people and spent the beginning of her career in the nonprofit field before starting her own business. Rosetta loved to see other people succeed and dedicated her time and energy to empowering others to reach their goals and dreams. She studied English and was able to use words to spread a message of leadership, empowerment and love. Over the years, Rosetta was able to transform millions of lives with her books, speeches, programs and philanthropy and won numerous awards recognizing her efforts. She will be missed for her positive, caring spirit and insatiable curiosity about the world. Her friends and family will always cherish her willingness to support them in their lives spiritually, emotionally and financially. Rosetta loved traveling and enjoyed her experiences visiting every continent and tasting cuisines from across the globe. She was especially fond of dessert, bourbon and handsome men and enjoyed them in excess. Eventually, she met the love of her life and they decided to settle down in Honolulu, Hawaii in a modest home near the beach. As part of her legacy, she has chosen to bequeath the bulk of her estate to a nonprofit organization serving women of color.

Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your eulogy in the comments! How did you feel as you were writing it? Were you contemplative? Hopeful? If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

If you’ve seen the movie The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, then you already know what this post is all about. If not, here’s a synopsis:

“Corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to leave it and do all the things they have ever wanted to do before they die according to their bucket list.”

Today, you’re going to make your own bucket list.

Estimated Time to Complete: 30-60 minutes

Imagine you’ve just been told you’re about to die in six months. Make a list of ALL the things you want to do, see or accomplish before you die. That’s it. Go.

Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your “bucket list” with us in the comments! If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

I’ve been practicing communicating my feelings and needs as part of my journey to do everything in love.

Some days, I am able to summon up the courage to put it all out there and say what I feel to get what I need. Even if/when the person doesn’t respond the way I want them to, I feel good that I’ve said what I needed to. When I tell my truth, I get what I want more often than not.

Other times, I stumble my way through words and emotions and the words that give meaning to those emotions. Sometimes it gets “too hard,” and I let fear take over. I default to what I know, which can be anything from using manipulative language, blaming the other person for not meeting my needs or just straight giving up. That’s when it all goes downhill for me and whoever I’m in relationship with.

What are you supposed to do when you forget? What happens after you take actions that are out of alignment with your values and intentions?

I used to think that you were supposed to fix it. Or at least, try to. You smooth things over and maybe bake a cake.

Today, though, I am meditating on wisdom from Mark Nepo (I read his daily essays from The Book of Awakening):

Inhale and try again.

Start with your best self and go from there. It sounds so simple, but it’s not.

Every day we have to walk the path.

And if you think it ever gets any easier, you’re in for a rude awakening.

This post is Day 28 of the January 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. I am posting all of the exercises live on a daily basis here on the blog throughout the month. Sign up here to officially join us. To make sure you don’t miss any future assignments, subscribe to the blog here.

Yesterday, you made strides in reviving your love life. In that process, you may have gotten stuck in some of your mental baggage from the past. We all do at some point! But today, you’re finally going to let go of the past. Literally.

Estimated Time to Complete: 60-90 minutes

Today’s exercise consists of three parts, and they are all equally important to the process of letting go of negative events and experiences from the past.

Step 1: Acknowledgement

Go grab your reset notebook and write down all the things that you’re still holding onto from the past year (or even the past 30 years!). The timeframe is up to you. Your list should include bad experiences, failed relationships, arguments with friends and family, people who hurt you, situations you regret, jobs you got fired from, etc. If you want to go back more than a year, you can also include situations from your childhood, people you still have hold grudges against from high school, etc.

Step 2: Affirmation

For each item on your list, find a way to achieve closure, even if it is a small amount of relief. Think of an affirmation or personal mantra you can apply to the past event that will remove the painful or negative aspect of it and allow you to move on. You can either write them down in your notebook or say them out loud as you go down each item on the list.

Here is an example from my own life:

Past event: A painful breakup with a man that I thought would be my husband.

Affirmation: I’m glad things happened the way they did. When we broke up, I finally became committed to living an authentic life and pursuing what really made me happy. Thank you for letting me go. I can appreciate it now. I am grateful and free.

Step 3: Absolution

Now, you’re going to destroy your entire list. Tear the page(s) out of your notebook and do the following (and this is very important):

Burn it.

Go outside and do it with a lighter or a match. Stand in front of your stove and do it when you get a moment alone in the kitchen. I don’t care how you burn it, just get rid of that list! And consider this a symbolic “reset ceremony” of starting off the year ahead fresh and unencumbered with your old pain and suffering.

Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your experience with us in the comments! How long was your list? How did you feel when you burned it? If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

This post is Day 27 of the January 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. I am posting all of the exercises live on a daily basis here on the blog throughout the month. Sign up here to officially join us. To make sure you don’t miss any future assignments, subscribe to the blog here.

Yesterday, you made a new friend. Now that you’re feeling extra social, today, I challenge you to get back in tune with your romantic side. Today, you will take steps to revive your love life.

Estimated Time to Complete: Varies

Today’s challenge has two options: one for those who already have a partner and one for those who are single and looking for a partner.

Option 1:

If you already have a partner or spouse, do something out of the ordinary. Do something you used to do when you first met or do something you’ve never done before. Do something romantic for no reason except that it’s Saturday.

If you’re looking for ideas, I always find good ones on Lovingyou.com pertaining to love, romance, passion and sex. They also have a really fantastic list of date night ideas whether you want to stay in or go out. Clearly, there are a million ideas out there to bring more spice into your relationship. Try one!

Option 2:

If you want to find a romantic partner, you can approach someone you already like or find attractive and ask for their phone number or ask them out on a date. Or, instead of staying in the house watching TV, make plans to go out tonight to a popular spot for singles in your area – perhaps a lounge or nightclub. You might also get some ideas from this post: Five Often-Overlooked Places to Meet Single Men.

Or, you can sign up for an online dating service. If you’ve never tried online dating before, I’ve written A Brief Guide to Getting Started with Online Dating. After experimenting quite a bit with different online dating sites over the past year, I have a few favorites that I outline in the post along with some valuable tips to maximize your online dating experience.

Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, tell us about what you did to spice up your love life in the comments! Also let us know if any immediate results have occurred, either with an outcome or simply a change in your frame of mind. If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

This post is Day 26 of the January 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. I am posting all of the exercises live on a daily basis here on the blog throughout the month. Sign up here to officially join us. To make sure you don’t miss any future assignments, subscribe to the blog here.

Yesterday, you joined a community to support your goals. Whatever community you chose to join – whether online or offline – it’s not going to do you any good if you don’t connect with the people in it! So today, you’re going to make a new friend. The idea is that through your new networks, you now have new opportunities for mutual support. The more like-minded people you align yourself with, the less lonely it will be on the road toward reaching your goals.

Estimated Time to Complete: 30-60 minutes

Think about the people you’ve encountered so far in your community of support. Who have been the folks that you’ve “clicked” with the most? Make a list of at least three people you’ve met recently that you have something in common with. Or maybe just those who have a similar outlook for their future and goals for life. These are your potential new friends!

Your next step can take the form of any of the following:

Invite them to meet up for coffee, lunch, drinks or dinner

Ask them to join you for an upcoming event of mutual interest – perhaps a seminar, conference, happy hour, concert, play, art gallery, or party

Call, Skype, email or text them to see how they’ve been doing since the last time you saw them

Remember, real friendships take time! You’re just taking the first step now to build a new relationship that will support and uplift you in your ongoing journey to live a successful life.

Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your experience with us in the comments! How did you approach your new friend? If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

For our third informal happy hour, over 20 ladies showed up to network and mingle at La Tasca in Washington, DC. Their downstairs bar was the perfect location for us – it was fashioned like someone’s well-decorated living room. This happy hour was extra special as my mom was able to join us and my grandmother was in town!

They also had some really great food and drink specials, like the La Tasca red wine sangria I enjoyed with a few tapas. Everything was under $4 before 7pm!

What made this happy hour a little different than some of the others was that I noticed even MORE natural-haired women joining us as well as entrepreneurs who are just getting their side hustle started or those who have been at it for a little while.

I had a lovely time meeting so many positive, happy black women who are doing big things. It’s amazing what can happen when we come together. A few ladies even made connections for potential business partnerships!

Most of all, we were just able to share good energy and good information with each other through lively conversations and sharing resources for what’s working for us in our lives and businesses right now.

Lots of ladies suggested that we make our happy hours a quarterly affair, so I’m hoping to put together a spring happy hour soon. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out on Monday for our third informal happy hour!

If you are interested in hosting a HBW happy hour in your city, I would love to support you, so please feel free to email me at rosetta (at) rosettathurman (dot) com. I have some tentative plans for HBW events/happy hours in a couple of other cities besides DC this year, so I will keep you updated as those unfold.
